Hi! I’m looking for books to get my 7 yo daughter for Christmas on the same level as the Billy and Blaze series. I came across a series called Catwings, and it looks like it would be perfect for her because she loves animals, especially cats. Is anyone familiar with this series? I don’t want to get something twaddly. I’m also open to other suggestions. Thanks in advance!

B is for Betsy series of stories by Carolyn Haywood

It may be for a bit older, but my daughter loved Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron.  There is also a picture book, and one for adults.

I loved Catwings growing up! I’ll admit I haven’t read them since I was young but if I remember correctly, they weren’t twaddly. I don’t think they had exceptional language but they didn’t talk down to kids(again from what I remember!)

I was just thinking my kids love anything by Cynthia Rylant there are some beginner series such as: Henry and Mudge, Mr. Putter and Tabby, Annie and Snowball, Poppleton, The Lighthouse Family, and Cobble Street Cousins. Those are all books I plan on transitioning my 6-year-old too because she loves any book I’ve read aloud by Cynthia Rylant.

Take a look at Milly Molly Mandy. The reading level is probably just right and the illustrations are SO CUTE, you might need smelling salts. I’m sure I’ll think of more, but that’s one right off the top of my head.

Thanks for bringing that up, alphabetika! We actually have a Milly Molly Mandy collection that I read aloud when my kids were a little younger, but it would be a great option to give her now to read alone.

My son read the first Catwings book this year and loved it.  Definitely not twaddle!

I think AO has free reading booklists, with some selections for them to read on their own.  Year 2 would probably have the level you’d want.  One of my DD’s loved Catwings and the sequal.

A list that I just LOVE to get ideas from is at this link:

Maybe you can find something there.
