Book substitutions

I have found that many of the book lists for multiple subjects are not easily located in the libraries around me. I prefer to have book in hand versus looking at something online. I order some, but see that many are out of print. Also, I cannot afford to order all. Part of the reason I like doing these subjects through SCM is because I don’t have to spend time finding living books related to to the subject we are studying. I really don’t want to spend the extra time having to find a different book to use than what is in the book list for the subject (nor do I have a lot of time to do this). Is there somewhere that an alternative book lists or list is suggested for subjects?
