If I can’t find a reasonably priced edition of Oxford First Ancient History by the time school starts what would you replace it with for a 9th grader? I just can’t make myself pay upwards of $50 for it.
I haven’t done Module 1 & 2 yet but I have plenty of books left over from Sonlight and MFW to cover the gaps from the missing book. There is so much on Netflix too that I just search there and usually find something I can use to fill any gaps. SCM has tried to reprint the book but the copyright owner has said no. Sad, but true.
It might work for you but we didn’t like it, so I sold both my volumes 1 & 2. We used Story of the World previously. I now have the 6th edition copy of Spielvogel’s Western Civilization that I will reference as needed next year. There are newer editions but this one is in one volume and is the one Tapestry of Grace recommended. I bought it used at Amazon. I wouldn’t pay the $100+ price for a new copy but $25 for used was worth it to me.
The cover picture is three ladies playing musical instruments. I haven’t used it yet so it may cause MEGO too but I think the ISBN # is: 0-534-64602-6 This is the number for the student edition. I haven’t looked at it enough to figure out if I have the student edition high school or college version. I just bought it so it would match TOG assignments. Chrsity begged for a higher level text than SOTW. LOL
We’re kind of all over the map studying the 20th century but starting with the Gilded Age in the late 1880’s but reading the OT and looking at SCM 1 & 2. Basically we’re doing a combo Sonlight Core 300 20th Century with Tapestry of Grace and SCM Modules 6 , 1, & 2. Oh yeah, I have Beautiful Feet US & World History too.
Streams of Civilization is a little dry, imo. Story of the World would be too young for a 9th grader. Have you checked out Nothing New press? I have some of their reprints and I like them, but I haven’t tried the ancient history ones. I have the Spielvogel book and have liked the parts that I’ve read in paging through. You could also check out Van Loon’s Story of Mankind. Some curriculums recommend that, and what I’ve read of that has been quite engaging, but is written from an evolutionary standpoint. The Spielvogel book is written much more as a textbook and the Van Loon book is more conversational.
