DS is almost 6 and a very advanced reader. We’ve been trying to work on his comprehension lately, so for the past few months he’s had assigned reading daily. We’ve gotten through the CLP nature reader book 1, and just started book 2 last week. I like the idea, but it’s definitely not enough content to last him through the year (he’s entering 1st grade this fall). So I am looking for another book or two to mix it up with. I’m envisioning nature reader 2-3 days a week, and another book 2-3 days a week. I like that they are small chunks of reading, so he can just read one section at a time. He really enjoys history, and we are planning to do american history this fall. He reads a bunch of history/biographies for fun and during free read time. I just want something to check his comprehension. Thanks!

The Thornton Burgess books are great for this. Look for the ones that are thin volumes like “The Story of Sammy Jay” rather than the Bird Book or the Animal Book.

Good idea, Nebby. We have used those as read alouds in the past and enjoyed them. Thanks!

Pointed to history you could do the 3 volumes of American History Stories by Mara Pratt. They are free online to download (I have mine on Kindle). I think Yesterday’s Classics has them in print format too.

What about some of the Beatrix Potter stories? He wouldn’t finish one per day, but could aim for one per week. She did quite a few.
