My 9 y/o just flew through all of the extended Little House Series (Martha/Charlotte/Caroline/RoseYears).
She read them so fast, I have no chance of prereading. At the rate she
went through I need to quickly find other good books/series to keep her excited about reading…any suggestions…a friend suggested Eltsie Densmore (sp.?? Haven’t heard of or researched yet…). Any suggestions appreciated!!
wow, Anna – great list! I’ll print it out and keep it for library visits.
And I’d add the Dimwood Tales series by Avi to the list, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, Understood Betsy, and The Saturdays (and three or four other books in that series).
And, the American Girl series, if you’re into that. My oldest daughter really enjoyed those.
These are great suggestions. My 8 yo has been reading Carolyn Haywood books written in 1950’s and 1960’s about Betsy, and Primrose Day. She also read a Betsy-Tacy by Maud Hart Lovelace.
Those Carolyn Haywood books I mentioned were written in the early 1940’s. She wrote other books later. And we have the Betsy-Tacy set as four separate books and then there are more for older girls. I often look at the readers in the Sonlight catalog for more ideas and then check reviews on Amazon. There is an older post on this forum about the Elsie Dinsmore series you can read. I decided not to get those books.
Thanks…looks like plenty to explore…I’m selfish because many books I want to do as a family, at least first, because I don’t want to miss them!!! I don’t get to read much–ok ever–on my own, so I need to enjoy their books!!! Thanks so much for all the suggestions!!!
How do I find the old post in the forum? Haven’t figured that out with the changes. I tried the search at the way bottom, but it seems like it’s site wide, and not of the forums. It came up with no results.
3fallingleaves — that made me laugh: the part about you being selfish and wanting to do some books as a family. I’m that way, too!!! I don’t remember reading all the great books that are mentioned on this forum – I know I read a lot of Nancy Drew and Trixie Belden and Frances Hodgson Burnett- and that’s all I can remember! So now that I’m exposed to all these GREAT books, I want to read them too…..and I hate to read them alone, it’s so much fun to share good books as a family.
