In the All-day CM Seminar there is a sample of the BOC on page 11. It lists Beatrix Potter with the heading 1900-1999 20th century. I’m confused. Are we looking to enter her birth year or the year an event occurred (ie book written)? She was born in 1866 so I would assume we enter her in 1800-1899 19th century. We are just starting our family BOC and I want to start off on the right foot!! Please clarify. Thanks!

You can do what makes sense to you.

We usually enter people in around the date the person is known for. So we would put Columbus at 1492.

What would you do if they were known for multiple things with some crossing over into a new century?  I may be overthinking it…

In that case I let my kids choose.  (Actually, they mostly choose where to put things anyway….) – I know (although I can’t remember who the person is) that there is someone that is near the end of one century in my son’s book, and near the beginning of the next in my daughter’s book.

I have seen timeline books that use a grid, and a line for each person/event to show the entire span of that person’s life or the span of the event…. which I think would also be neat.  (I think you end up a bit limited on how many events/people you can include though!)
