This may seem like a silly question but I’m going to ask anyway.
What is the best way you have found to keep our place in all the books?
I don’t like books marks because as soon as a child picks up the book they fall out and who knows where you were. I am a corner folder (hides head in shame) but then corners fall off especially if the paper is dried out at all.
I have been using neon post-its. They are maybe 1/2 inch wide and two inches long. They aren’t actually ‘Post-it’ brand, so they lose there stickiness after a while, but they do make it through a book!
We’re making some fun bookmarks at Makayla’s 13th birhtday party in two weeks (booklover theme). Two we’re doing that may fit what you want:
Elastic loop. We’re sewing silk flowers on instead of the owl.
Ribbon and paperclip. We’ll put the bookmark on a book cover and use the ribbons to hold places. Our ribbons will have key charms at the end though we considered beads instead.
Search for “book darts” They are invaluable. They are cheap, you can get oodles of them, they can even come in colors that you could then assign to your children. They easily mark EXACTLY where you are, they are lightweight enough not to bend the pages, and they do not leave residue from the sticky stuff—you may not think that it leaves much, since flags don’t leave the pages feeling sticky, but they do leave residue and it is not archival—in time, your books can yellow more there than other places. So, book darts rule!!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE that idea for the elastic bookmarks! That is adorable. My girls will be all over that one! I know you have a busy household but you mind telling me where you purchased the elastic ribbon and what width did you chose?
Great and USEFUL handicrafts! Yay! It’s so easy to imagine how this type of bookmark could bless others. Thank you so much for sharing that idea with us.
Our closest craft store is Hobby Lobby so we printed off 40% off coupons online and went shopping. They have elastic in 2 places, with sewing supplies like needles and velcro, and then over with the ribbon (in more colors). Makayla chose black elastic that is 3/8th inch wide (I would have chosen wider but she prefers narrower). We bought two bunches of silk flowers and two days ago she popped the flowers off and took layers of petals apart. This way each girl can choose the layer colors they want for their flower. We’ll sew by hand using buttons as the flower centers. The only presewn part for the part will be the elastic, already sewn into loops.
So lovely! Thank you so much for the extra help. A small hand sewing project will be just perfect for us. We were going to make felt bags and a small weaving project for their doll house, but this will be a little more useful for our school books. We can come back to the other two. We are about to start first grade and handicrafts and science are my favorites, besides bible. 🙂
Any chance someone has posted (or will post) a little tutorial for the elastic band bookmarks? Maybe with a boy/non-flower alternative? I know, it’s so simple, a tutorial? Because I am that awful with stuff like this. Although even just the band would be useful, I suppose, without the cute extras.
But just thinking…maybe this wouldn’t work as well with more than person trading the book at the same time…essentially if there is a need for 2 or more bookmarks in one book.
I was thinking of adapting the book mark idea to a no sew project. We have a few scrapbook ing flower decorations with a tiny brad on the back. Seems like it would be really easy to just poke it through the band. I’m sure you could find other boyish looking scrapbook decorations with a brad on the back.
