Hey All!  Every Spring I get obsessed with planning out our next school year and researching all kinds of educational materials.  So that is where this post comes from!

I really need some extensive booklists for the following categories (all for K student, age 5-6):

    1) Easy-to-Read books – Basic Literature

    2) Easy-to-Read books – History (family, local, world).

    3) Easy-to-Read books – Social Studies (neighborhoods, maps, foreign countries, immigration, and our government).

Anyone know of a good resource or booklist for this or have any ideas for me?  I would prefer the titles to be appropriate for conservative Christianity, not counter-biblical, and obviously CM-friendly.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate the help.  I still have yet to reply to all the wonderful responses I received on my last post but I am incredibly thankful.  I am also up to my eye balls in curriculum research!  Everyone has been extremely helpful though.  Thanks again!

Oh and I know about the early years read-aloud suggestions in the SCM early years guide but I don’t know if that is going to meet all of our needs.  I am really hoping to find an extensive list, if anyone knows of one.  Thanks!!

Are you wanting books to read to the student or books they can read? I’m thinking it is the former.

So here are books I love reading to my Kindy age children:

    Basic Lit:

    Charlotte’s Web

    Trumpet of the Swan

    The Twenty-One Balloons

    All of Beatrix Potter’s Tales

    Paddington Bear books

    The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Fun Picture Books for geography at this age are:

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World

How to Make a Cherry Pie and See the USA

Fun math read alouds for this age:

Check out the MathStart series at your local library. Lots of titles all fun picture books that cover math concepts in fun ways.

    Others:

Just Plain Fancy (tells of amish children in a sweet story with eggs that hatch into unexpected bird)

Also be sure to read them scripture stories a lot! Either straight from the scriptures or find a children’s version you like.

You might also check out this book that contains many lists of picture books that teach art, science, history, music, etc:

The ebook is listed on the right lower side at half the cost.

Here is a listing of the best books we read last year, when my sons were 5-6.

I love the book Books That Build Character. Almost everything out of this book has been excellent. I also have Books Children Love, which is a CM compilation yet so far it hasn’t been as great a fit for us. I’ll keep using it and hope as we get more of the books I’ll feel differently. I have list upon lists of ‘excellent’ books to pull from, my problem is keeping them all organized!

Me on the Map for neighborhoods/maps. My 6 yo likes to draw her own maps of where we live after reading it.
