I went to the library today to pick up a book on hold and drop off a few books – and went to the children’s section to look for a couple of things… and while talking to the Children’s Librarian, I realized there was a yellow sticky on a cart of books that said “withdrawn”. So asking – yes the books are withdrawn, but haven’t been taken to the area of the library with the books for sale, but I could go through to find anything I’d like to buy.
Our Library system had a few prices – but basically you can buy a Bag (stack) of books for a little over $5… and they are quite liberal with how many books might fit in a bag….
Well, what a haul!
We got
an Angelina Balerina book (ok, twaddle, but my girls love it…)
A Paper Airplane Book which my son already loves
Harry by the Sea – a fairly easy to read book
Drawing for Older Children & Teens by Mona Brookes (author of Drawing with Children)
Garbage Delight – Canadian poestry (twaddle or a find?)
See Saw Saskatchewan – Canadian poetry (twaddle or a find?)
Eenie Meenie Manitoba – Canadian poetry (twaddle or a find?)
Oxford Book of Poetry for Children (twaddle or a find?)
Tales from Shakespeare (woohoo!)
One-Person Puppet Plays
Make Way for Ducklings
A Child’s Garden of Verses
Canterbury Tales (translated and adapted… hopefully good?)
The Cremation of Sam McGee – a classic epic Canadian (I think?) Poem
a couple of I Spy books
and – if those treasures weren’t enough….. I found
The Spirit of Canada! This is a $45 dollar book that… well the sub timtle says it… “Canada’s Story in Legends, Fiction, Poems, and Songs”. Although many of the stories are just excerpts from books, it is great for me to decide if we might want to read that book or not. The folk songs are great (we know a lot of them), and well – it is a treasure! We had taken it out a couple of times and my dh had suggested buying a copy before I told him the price… so I’m jumping up and down.
I really have to figure out a way to organize our homeschool books better, I am really losing track of what I own. My dh rolls his eyes everytime I come home with books… and our shelves are getting pretty full. But I figure you can rarely have too many books…. you might have ones you don’t need… well, I had to share with you guys because you will appreciate it.
I’m looking forward to our library’s big book sale next month. There seem to be so many books disappearing that I’m hoping to get my hands on them. Every time I go to my ‘for later’ list that I have set up on the library’s website, some of the books are no longer available. It makes me crazy to think all these great books are being withdrawn from circulation. My only solace is the hope that I might find them for sale!
I am getting antsy for some more book sales to start around here. Too bad my mom is out of work. She and I always make a date of it to go all day to book sales. Now she can’t buy any. I may have to take my almost-9yo. She likes books, and she’s the only one who can read well yet.
Is your mom’s birthday anytime soon? Perhaps a handmade coupon for a few book sale purchases and lunch (out or at your house) would make a nice gift from you and her grandchildren.
I love a great book sale! I love going to the thrift shops too! I am addicted to books! 🙂 UGH!
I have been putting mine in a milk crate type filing system. I put history together in one. science in another, I plan on putting the History books by country and timeline frame to study easier. Reference books on the subjects in the front of the box. I hope this helps you organize them. 🙂 My book shelves over flow and I need a way to store them. This seemed like a better idea.
