I want to put all my books in a database. But not just the ones I own (like I’ve seen on other discussions), but also the ones I am looking for, too. I want to be able to record title, author, a category (school, reader, craft, etc), and a source (like from the SCM list or the AO list or my own personal collection), plus if I own it or not. I want it all centralized so it’s not on 4 different Excel lists (or more!). Does anyone know of anything like this? Or does my hubby have to create one from scratch for me?
I did just that all last night!:) I used a blank list sheet in excel. My lists show “title”, “author”, “lesson”, “source”, “format”, “price”, “year” “comments”. When you use a list you can sort and filter all columns. I started from scratch.
Have you tried LibraryThing? I use it a little, and though I have not gone through all the books I own, I have tried to keep up with new books and also have created a wishlist of books I’ve seen in a booklist or whatnot that I would like to get. There is a lot you can do with the site and I know I have not come close to exploring it’s capabilities. It is online though, so maybe not what you need, but I thought I would mention it. http://www.librarything.com/
I have started using GoodReads. It is free online and has a free iphone app. You can put books in several catagories and in more than one at a time. It is working for me so far. I am not sure if you can tag books with these different things you want to track, but take a look, it might work for you.
Does anybody know if there is some sort of comparison of features between Library Thing and GoodReads? Or am I just in decision-making dreamland? (LOL)
Also, am I correct that Bookpedia is for Mac and not PC?
We’ve loaded most of the SCM books on many of the online book sites. Jordan handled that so I’ll ask him if he has any thoughts on a comparison between the sites.
I like both GoodReads and Library Thing. Both have close to the same features and information about your books. I’d pretty much put them on equal footing.
Library Thing wins bonus points from me for the charts and stats telling you how high your books stack up and other fun stuff. Where else can you see if you have a book stack as high as a hobbit?
And that’s probably all I’m qualified to say about either.
I found http://www.myhomelibrary.net today. You can add your resources and use preset categories or ones that you enter yourself. If you have an iphone/ipod with a camera you can scan barcodes for easy entry. There are other options for entering if you do not own an iphone/ipod. I found this today and it sounded like something you are looking for and wanted to share! 🙂
edited to add: it has a wishlist, lender and borrower options as well, so you can keep track of all the extras!
I wish it had more info on the website. I have no iphone, and it only says it’s for the iphone. 🙁
I should also mention, many of the books I own are very old and don’t have barcodes. I have many, many vintage books, and plenty that were written before barcodes were invented, and plenty more that just plain don’t have barcodes. So something like this wouldn’t really work for me anyway. I don’t have a choice but to enter it all in manually.
Would Library Thing work well for a Homeschool Library catalog….for members to access and see what’s available? I have a database that I’m not finding user friendly (for me), but I have some parents that live almost an hour away that would like to be able to know if we have a book before making a trip.
For more of a lending library approach you might look into setting up a website with WordPress and the Web Librarian plugin. You could use it to manage your library and allow others to check your catalog online before traveling.
