We have God Found Us You by Lisa Tawn Bergren and You Are Special, You Were Chosen by Joanna Ferlan. We’ve read both to our sons, adopted at birth. God Found Us You is written from the perspective of 2 foxes, and is really cute. The baby fox doesn’t look like the momma fox, which is great since our adoptions are transracial. You Are Special features actual kids, and talks specifically about the baby growing in the first mother’s belly. I like having both because the first is conceptual and the second is pretty specific. My only quibble with You Are Special is that the concept of a “guardian angel” is used heavily. I substitute God or Providence ’cause that’s how we roll around here. 🙂
My real recommendation is to compile an adoption book/scrapbook featuring your family’s journey and your child’s birth story/adoption story. This is huge and really helps dispel a lot of fantasy the child might fabricate around his/her origins. If it’s an international adoption, keepsakes from that country are great. Y’all can “read” this over and over together as a family and not only does it provide a “where did I come from” narrative but also builds family identity since it is also the parents’ journey to the child.
Hope this helps!
