Boyhood and Beyond, Created for Work, Practical Happiness, and Everyday Battles
How have you used these books? I first thought they were just for boys to read on their own. But it seems from reading reviews on Amazon, specifically about Created for Work, that they may be good to read aloud to the whole family for character development. Are all four of these books appropriate to be read aloud to both boy and girl? And what ages? I have boy age 11 and girl turning 9 in the fall. Thanks.
I LOVE the Bob Schultz books, well the two we’ve read so far. What you suggest is exactly what we’ve done: read one chapter and discuss it each week. So far we’ve read Created for Work and Practical Happiness. Both of those I found inspiring, encouraging, convicting, and instructing even for myself. Even though they are addressed to boys the topics covered are applicable to everyone, I think. Well, except the Boyhood book – that’s probably mainly appropriate for boys. 🙂 We read Created for Work for his “year 5” (10-11yo) and just completed Practical Happiness for “year 6.” I was planning to read Boyhood next year, but have decided we need to read Created for Work again. So will read Boyhood for year 8 instead. And who knows, maybe we’ll re-read Practical Happiness again down the road, too. I just gave it to my husband for potential use for his own personal devotion time. I may pick it up myself again. It has some really good thoughts regarding perspective. I have not looked at Everyday Battles. I’ll have to check that one out.
I’m finishing Boyhood and Beyond with ds11. It is fantastic. Really could have been called Childhood and Beyond save the chapter on marriage that we just finished. It has meant my son right where he is each time we’ve read it. It’s met and convicted me, too.
I love those books. We do a chapter once in while because I want to make them last longer! I read over breakfast and we all share together. My husband really likes them too and it is the only time we are all together.
