We got our vitamix at Costco a few years ago, love it, use it daily. It’s also great for chopping veggies like carrots, too. You just drop them through the hole on top of a spinning blade. Here’s our green smoothie recipe
About a cup of green grapes
Half a banana
A handful of frozen pineapple or mango or both
Kale
Water until covering grapes
A little ice
Here is a spicy cinnamon smoothie:
1/2 bunch of kale
1 banana
1/4 cup red grapes
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 dash of cayenne pepper (to taste)
1/2 cup of ice
1/2 cup water or until desired consistency is reached
We also make a strawberry slushie out of strawberries, rhubarb, water and stevia.
I have a Blendtec as well and have not used it to grind wheat since I have a grain mill attachment for my juicer. I did want to see how it compared so I just got done grinding some soft white wheat in the Blendtec. I think it is comparable to my grain mill as far as texture and was quieter and quicker than my grain mill attachment. It’s not the finest flour, but I like a bit of texture. I want to start sprouting my grain, which you would dry in a dehydrater after it has sprouted. The drying step might make the flour finer when it is ground. I also use my Blendtec to powder my Zote bars for laundry soap and as long as the soap is completely dry, it powders very well.
Thanks Ruth! That’s great info. I probably would sprout mine as we have a dehydrator. If we end up getting one, I’ll be back for info on the Zote bars!
I have a Vitamix vs. a Blendtec, and I love the Vitamix. But I do think had we gotten a Blendtec we would have been happy with that as well. The Blendtec’s height fits under the cabinets and the Vitamix does not. You can’t go wrong with either one IMHO.
Green Smoothies that are hit here:
1. pineapple, mango, coconut water, ice if not using frozen fruit, and a few handfuls of spinach
2. 1-2 apples, 3-4 leaves of swiss chard, thin slice of lemon, about 2-3 cups of blueberries, about 2 cups of water, ice if not using frozen fruit
3. 2-3 water, several leaves of kale (stems removed because they can taste bitter), thin slice of lemon or lime, agave to taste if desired, and 2-3 cups of Costco’s frozen mixed fruit blend.
3. 2-3 cups water, pears, grapes, kale, and ice.
And our favorite treat which isn’t a green smoothie but yummy is below. The recipe came from one of Dr. Furhman’s books but I adapted it a little:
Healthy fudgesicle sub: about 1/2 cup milk or milk substitute, 2-3 ripe bananas, 1 cup of raw cashews, 1 tsp vanilla, 2 Tbsp cocoa powder or karob powder. Blend till smooth, pour in popsicle molds, and freeze. These taste creamy like fudgesicles. My kids eat this for breakfast most days.
If you have a dehydrator, in the Blendtec you could blend up whatever fruit you liked to make fruit leather. Apples and blueberries blended with a sliver of lemon makes a delicious treat eaten straight out of the blender or dehydrated into leather.
Hummus and pesto sauce are two other staples I make often.
Does either the BlendTec or the Vitamix have a glass container? I’d love to stay away from the leaching effect especially if I’m doing anything warm. Just curious. My M-I-L seems to want to get us something extravagant this year, and this might just be it! Thx.
I have had my BlendTec since June, and I wouldn’t be without it! I use it daily, sometimes twice a day.
@Jenni, I don’t know about the Vitamix, but the BlendTec container is BPA-free. I worried about that too, but was reassured when I saw that the container is BPA-free. I haven’t made anything hot in mine yet, but I plan to eventually–when the right recipe comes along.
I have not ground grain in my BlendTec simply because I already had a grain mill that I enjoy, but we do have some excellent smoothies and milkshakes!
I bought the newest Vitamix and it is AWESOME!!! “No chunks!” as my kids would say. 😉 I bought it through Ebates and got cash back too. I suggest you look on their site for the company that has the best deal and buy through that. I saved over $200.
