I am new to Charlotte Mason Philosphy, and I am liking it. Plan on using it with my 5 year old. My concern is, we are a family who will be studying Black History. Can CM work with studying Black History through literature. Would reading books written by one author be considered living books.
Another question I have, can one utilize their own books and not what’s presented here for the CM learning.

Yes, CM can work studying Black History. Look for books written by one author with a passion for his/her subject. You want books that make the subject come alive without talking down to the child. Consider autobiographies, books written in a conversational tone, and books written in narrative (story) style.
We just finished reading a nice biography of George Washington Carver by David Collins. I believe that series (called the Sower Series) also has a biography on one of my favorite singers, Mahalia Jackson. Amos Fortune, Free Man is another one of our favorites. I think all three are recommended for grades 4 and up, but I’m sure you’ll find good living books that are appropriate for your 5 year old too.
Please do use your own books; the key is to make sure they are living books. Don’t feel you have to limit yourself to just what is presented on this site. The books recommended here are only suggestions. I think almost all CM moms are constantly on the lookout for more living books everywhere they go. 🙂

We use a lot of biographies and poetry. My oldest son is from Haiti and one of my daughters is Guatemalan. We try to include as many different races as possible because they are both very sensitive to knowing that people who look like them have contributed something great to the world… and rightly so. I love that there are so many scholars, scientists, poets, and war heros to study. That doesn’t even include literature about other cultures. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding those kinds of books at the library. And Sonya’s list above is great. 🙂

May I also suggest Blessed Heritage Resources by Belinda Bullard. We haved used her Early Amer. History Guide this year and really enjoyed it. They are set up very similar to Truthquest or Beautiful Feet. She has the guide planned out for 36 weeks so it takes some guess work out for you. You simply use your library to check out the required literature. Her history isn’t exclusive but inclusive. She incorporates African American history into American History which I love. Belinda is a homeschool mom herself. Hey, I just got the latest CBD (Christian Book Distributors) catalog and noticed that Dave and Neta Jackson have just come out with “Heroes in Black History: True Stories from the Lives of African American Christian Heroes.” Looks interesting. I know we’ve enjoyed their other historical Hero Tales and Trailblazer books. Might be worth taking a look.
