We don’t do friend parties often. Kids can request them every other year but don’t usually. We do an extended family party, which is simple. We actually have one this weekend for my Caleb (turning 7) and my sister’s daughter (turning 8). The birthday child requests the dessert for the party. Everyone meets, talks, plays, and eats dessert. Birthday child gets a gift. Ta da.
I have 4 dc – dd16, ds13, dd10, ds7. DS7 is turning 8 next week. I LOVE celebrating birthdays, but usually quite simply. I give an option of a friends party or a location with a friend.
DD wanted a mall scavenger hunt for her 16th. It was fun and simple and started with cake in the food court. She had 7 girls there plus her little sister and her friend.
DS wanted an Amazing Race for his 13th. I did this for my oldest at 13, too. It was a lot of work and planning, but a whole lot of fun. We had about 20 kids plus adult drivers for the teams.
DD10 – we’re usually out of town for her birthday and it’s simple with cake and ice cream. Her last in town birthday was at a paint a pottery place with 5 friends.
DS7 – For his 8th, he has a friend coming to sleep over and then tomorrow we’re going to take them to an indoor trampoline place for a few hours.
Kids pick what they want for breakfast, dinner and dessert and enjoy gifts on their day.
I hope to always do something with the kids regardless of age in keeping with their wishes especially a family dinner.
We don’t do friend parties, but we have both sides of the family over for a big dinner party. This is 19-22 people! My mother and my husbands mother have been friends since i was about 7, so the families have fun together. The child picks a dinner and dessert. Then we open presents.
