1. My husband would like to read a biography of Abraham Lincoln. He’s not usually a big reader, so I would love to help him find an engaging living biography. Do you have any suggestions?

A few come to mind that you could take a look at and see which might fit best.
- Lincoln: A Photobiography by Russell Freedman
- Abe Lincoln: Log Cabin to White House by Sterling North
- Carl Sandburg’s biography on Lincoln is considered a classic; however, I’m not sure your husband would want to tackle 800 pages. If he does, look for Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years and the War Years.

I would like to add “Lincoln, Life-Size” by Philip and Peter Kunhardt. It’s a fascinating look at an enthralling man and the reading that accompanies each portrait is short (often from Lincoln himself or someone that knew him). It shows what a truly great and complex man he was.

We’ve read Abe Lincoln Grows Up by Carl Sandburg (written for children from the Sandburg book Sonya mentioned) and Abraham Lincoln by James Daugherty, which is a great follow-up to Abe Lincoln Grows Up. The first tells about Lincoln’s life from childhood to approx. age 21. The second gives a brief overview of Abe’s childhood and focuses more on his adult life. Both of these books are used in Beautiful Feet guides. They are quality, readable, living books.

BTW, kudos to your husband for wanting to read a Lincoln biography 🙂
Also, I just have to say, after studying Lincoln, I highly, highly recommend reading Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. It’s an extremely well done historic fiction novel set during the Civil War. I have thought about it many times since finishing the book as a read aloud to our kiddos. I look forward to reading it again someday with our younger son!
