My kids are 8, 6, 4 and baby. I have been trying to have 15 minutes or so per day of 1-on-1 time with my 4 year old. Sometimes we do cuisenaire rods, or a game, or her Rod and Staff workbook. She tags along with the many chapter books that I read together to all the kids, but I would like to have her own books to read with her. However, when I try to do this, my older 2 stop what they are doing (chores, independent work) and listen in! Of course I don’t want to not have them listen, but they have other stuff to do, and of course they can read these books themselves. Anyone deal with this?

Aw, 8 and 6 is so little still. What’s the harm (especially if we’re only talking 15 minutes here)? 🙂

At the same time, if you want it to be her special time with you, then maybe you need to explain that to them and shoo them away.

Good job taking the time to read aloud to your 4yo with a baby in the house–that can be a challenge!

My youngest isn’t reading on his own yet, so we do a read aloud together each night as a family and then my older two go to bed and read and I spend another 15 mins or so reading with my youngest. This gives us that one-on-one time without the others feeling like they are missing out.

One thing I do is let them get out the same manipulative/book/puzzle/etc. after they finish their work.  It usually motivates them to get their work done quicker!
