Hi, I am thinking about using the Bible for the main book in a high school literature course but I would rather than re-create the wheel if I don’t have to.  Does anyone know of a good, high school type curriculum that uses the Bible to teach literary elements and other things of the Bible? Thanks pj

We used Words of Delight: A Literary Introduction to the Bible by, Leland Ryken. He is a professor at Wheaton College.

I haven’t heard of the book retrofam recommends but wanted to say we’ve used other Ryken books and like him.

Is your goal to study the literary aspects of the Bible? My thinking is that if you are using the Bible to study literature in general, that is to get things to apply to understanding other literature that that is not the best way to go. But if your goal is understanding the Bible itself than it makes sense.

I respectfully disagree with Nebby about using Words of Delight as wrong for how to analyze literature.  This book explains literary terms using the Bible.  You walk away with a better understanding of the Bible,  and a working knowledge of literary analysis. Hope that helps!

I haven’t seen the book so I could be wrong. It’s just my thought that as the bible was written in other languages that it doesn’t help as much for learning things about English lit. Poetic forms come to mind. Hebrew poetry works very differently than ours does. Btw I say this as someone with a degree in Biblical Hebrew.
