Hey ladies! I have just been put in charge of the kids program at the plant nursery that my husband works at. 1 Saturday a month I will need to have planned a short lesson and little project for kids age 4-10ish to do. For example read about natural pest control with ladybugs and build a lady condo.
We like Bumblebee at Apple Tree Lane, Miss Rumphius, Roxaboxen (loosely science). I also read a chapter book to my kids (2nd, pre-k and 2) on my tablet called Seed Babies that they enjoyed. Not sure if that would work.
I really love the water book used in Outdoor Secrets, although don’t know if it really touches on what you’re looking for since it doesn’t mention rain collecting or anything, but still worthwile. Water Dance by Thomas Locker. A Seed is Sleepy by Diana Hutts Aston is a great one that touches on pollinating, but more about seeds. Both of those books have beautiful pictures and would be really visually interesting to a group.
i love all books by Jim Arnosky. Also, I just bought a series with titles Pond Watching, Wildlife Watching, etc. There are multiple books. The Bumble Bee at Apple Tree Lane is also part of a series. The outdoor secrets books are excellent.
Making an earthworm farm might work for this. We made them last year for a library program and the kids had a lot of fun. You can make it from recycled boxes, paper, etc.:
I have a lovely book about pollination that may be too old for your group but in case it helps someone else…
The Clover & the Bee by Anne Ophelia Dowden
Water cycle – there is a Magic School Bus episode that does a great job explaining it in a fun way. (Shocked I would recommend a video! But my boys loved this one.)
Gladys Conklin and Robert McClung both have wonderful books on ladybugs.
Lucky Ladybugs – Conklin
Ladybug – McClung
Not solely about sundials but talks about them in conjunction with telling time…
