One more question.  I am looking for a good literature book to go along with the Civil War years.  It seems there are many to choose from and I may, or may not have time to read it. This is for a bright, 11th grade student.

    Any suggestions??

What about Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane?  It’s a classic.  You don’t mention if your student is a young man or lady.  I would just like to add, I do think it is a good book, but may be a bit rough for a lady.  I struggled through it, and am glad I did, but war is not a pretty topic.

There is also Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt and the GA Henty book With Lee in Virginia.

    Hope that’s a start.

Hi thanks for answering my post. Yes, the student is a girl, almost 17. Would this be too graphic for a girl?

It may just be me 😉  It’s war, so there is shooting and wounds and blood. I guess it is reality and I know that people have to know that war is a horror.  It is not like modern stuff where it is all grossed out and made weird, it’s just the facts.  But I think when I was young it would have shocked me.  I don’t know how sensitive she is.  I am very sensitive.

You may want to check out the literature guide from Beautiful Feet for US & World History. The first part is exclusively about the Civil War, and the books used are listed on the website. My son, who is 15 and a 10th grader, has really enjoyed most of the selections and is learning a lot. The books used for the literature guide are a mix of novels and biographies.
