I prefer using real books when possible and I have a huge library but we are going on a long trip overseas and can’t take hardly anything. I’m looking for some free ebooks for my 10 yod son. Some of his favorite books are animal stories by Dick King Smith, Robert Lawson and others along those lines. He does like cowboys, indians, and adventure/historical things too. I know that I probably am looking for classic books mostly since those are the ones that will be free. I tried Henty recently and I think it was just to slow and tedious for him at this point. He has read the unabridged version of Treasure Island three times now. I know of a lot of good books for him to read just not sure what my be in free ebook form (I have a Kindle but can make anything work if I need to)
He tried Cat of Bubastes. I actually read this aloud to my two older ones a few years back and I like it! We did a lot Henty but haven’t with my third son. I do know that there is a lot of detail and I think my 10 yod got bogged down before he got interested. I may try it again though because it was over a year ago and I think he might be more ready for that now.
There is another historical fiction writer for boys that I’ve seen on lists that wrote adventures similar to Henty. Can’t think of his name but if anyone knows who I’m thinking of please post.
There is a Facebook page called Public Domain Books for Homeschooling. I’ve discovered some great books from their posts. Also, Bethlehem Books has $1.99 e-book sales a couple times a year. They have lots of great books for his age.
