Hi Tammy,
We love Shirley Hughes books such as Dogger, Alfie & Annie Rose books. My youngest is 3 and loves them. She brings them off the shelves for me to read.
There’s also the Frances Books by Russell Hoban, Guess How Much I love You by Sam McBratney
I’m always on the lookout for any non-twaddle books for all ages, and I am finding this alone is a learning process. I think each family’s booklist would be different. Different things inspire different people.

Inspired by another post, I went to Wal-Mart last night child-free and did some browsing for suggestions for what the grandparents get my children. (I know, but Wal-Mart is just about the only place they’ll shop unless I provide a catalog; no online shopping for them.) Anyway, I found some Sandra Boynton board books. What is the upper age range on those, do you think? Dd will be 3 1/2 at Christmas. Also, in your opinion, how old does a child have to be before he/she is too old for board books? I found some others I like, too.

Renelle, why didn’t anyone tell me about the Shirley Hughes books before? Thank you for sharing these. Alfie stories look delightful and not the least bit twaddly!

All of my boys like the Sandra Boynton books and they are 11, 8 and 4. My 11 would die if he knew I mentioned this, but his favorite song on one of the CD’s is Singing in the Shower. He was totally surprised that he would actually like the songs and books since he usually cringes when I put music on geared toward his brothers.
My 8yo loves the musicians factoids in the books and has to tell you about all of them:)
