I’m struggling to teach my DD to narrate. she’s almost 9 and in third grade. This is our first year homeschooling, so she has 3 years of PS under her belt.  I got her started the other day, about a book she’s really excited about Understood Betsy. She said “it’s a great book Mom! Betsy is like me. She’s little and shy and she’s nine and I’m almost nine and she has blonde hair too. And doesn’t Betsy kind of sound like Kelsey?”  LOL! I asked her to explain what happened to Betsy. She seems to remember the little details, and somewhat insignificant points stick with her, but bigger plot events slip by her completely…making me question her comprehension.  While I read aloud, she likes to draw a picture of what’s happening and then talk about it and is always spot on there. She’s never had to narrate before. Should I ask her more direct questions to make sure she’s understanding the story? How can I help her learn to narrate/communicate orally, instead of just drawing? Thanks!

    Kate,

If she’s able to draw and point out some details, you are having success. Just slowly build on it and don’t rush. Just because she’s older doesn’t mean she doesn’t need as much time as a young one. Narration is challenging for any age. Just give her small increments of reading everyday, and then ask for the narration. (don’t forget the free narration SCM bookmark if you want more narration ideas) Over time, increase the length of those passages.

    HTH!
