Has anyone put together a long-range plan using Beautiful Feet’s history guides?  I am trying to but it is very confusing.  Just look here and you’ll see why (make sure to scroll down)!  http://bfbooks.com/Is-there-a-suggested-study-sequence-I-should-follow-with-BFB.  I know it is supposed to be interest-led but I just need to see the big picture.  My plans can be flexible.  We are doing Early American Primary for K&1.

For long-term planning, I schedule which time period in which year in chronological order. I do not know which curriculum until one or two years ahead. I am familiar with many CM booklists so I do buy books ahead which I will likely use, if I find them used so I can save money.

Thank you!  I think my list is finally taking shape after staring at the available guides for awhile.  I’ll have to come back later and post it.  I’d like to show someone my big picture plan so I can get some feedback on it.  I think I just need to figure out grades 2, 3, and 4 at this point.  I’d like to use as many of the fun ones as I can (history of the horse, history of classical music) but I will probably have to check with state req. on that?  Hmm…  Okay, well thanks again!

Sure. As you do your big picture, keep in mind that many of the titles overlap with the SCM history/geography/Bible guides, like the Holling geography books and d’Aulaire history books are in modules 5 and 6. For primary character, we read those titles for bedtime reading as most are picture books, and we did not use the guide.

I have written a working plan using the BF books as my starting point. I don’t follow their guides day-by-day, but use some of their activities. I also add in many more books either as read-alouds or for independent reading. My oldest is 8 so this is a flexible plan that may change around a bit for the younger children, depending on how long we do history together. Gr. 1 & 2: Early Amer. Primary Gr. 3: Geography Thru Lit. + other history books Gr. 4: Early Amer. Intermediate + our state history Gr. 5: Western Expansion (with more state hist. most likely) Gr.6: Ancient His. Intermediate Gr.7: Medieval Jr. High Gr. 8: Early Amer. & World Gr.9: Ancient Senior High Gr. 10: Medieval Sr. High Gr. 11: US & World part 1 Sr. High Gr. 12: US & World part 2 Even during the American history years, we will add in world history topics/books from time to time.

That looks like a great plan bethanna!  I think I will probably end up doing something similar.  We have set BF aside for a short while but I want to pick it back up again soon.  I thought about just waiting and starting it up again next year (1st grade).  I’m just torn because although this is technically his K year, he is almost 6 and is really at more of a 1st grade level…

There is just no way to fit in all of their guides, is there?  I wasn’t able to fit BOTH History of the Horse and History of Science in… or the History of California + the History of Western Expansion (those two are 1 semester each), or History of Classical Music :(.  I think that is all that I am missing.  Looks like we’re spending 6 years on American History.  Does that sound right?  I’d like to go through each level though.  Here is what I have so far:

Grades 1&2:  Early American History Primary (+Teaching Character)

Grade 3:  History of the Horse or History of Science (+Teaching Character)

Grade 4:  Geography through Literature (+Teaching Character)

Grade 5:  Early American History Intermediate (+Teaching Character)

Grade 6:  Ancient History Junior High (+Teaching Character)

Grade 7:  Medieval History Junior High

Grade 8:  Early American and World History

Grade 9:  Ancient History Senior High

Grade 10:  Medieval History Senior High

Grade 11:  US and World History Sr. High Pt I & II

Grade 12:  US and World History Sr. High Pt III & IV

I think that looks do-able. Are there 4 parts to the senior high US/World history? 4 semesters? I figured that we may do the science and horse studies if the children have a particular interest in them.

Maybe utilizing summers might fit in some of the extras….at some of the books, maybe not all the activities?

Our eldest daughter LOVED the history of the horse in middle school. She used the earlier edition. I believe quite a bit has been added. It was her first self-teaching study. The guide helped her learn to stay organized and on track with a plan.

With that much American History, you might consider skipping some to fit in other titles if you don’t want to miss them.

Are you going to be using BF Christie? We are this year (Medieval Senior High for Makayla and Medieval Intermediate/Junior High for the rest of the kids, plus I have the grade 1-3 books for medieval from when we did SCM module 4 with Makayla years ago.).

One thing to look at is that BF has updated several of their guides, so the list above may not reflect their current guides.
