    Hey everyone,

I need your help. My family will be going on a vacation to Destin in a month. I would really like to do some activities and reading related to the beach and seashore…well actually my DH says for us to go on a vacation it needs to be educational…”We don’t just go to relax”…so I really want to honor him and have things planned to read and do while we are there. I need ideas and books to read. Our children are 8,6,4,2 but my sister will also have her children ages 5,3,and 1. My other sister and her husband will be there too…and this would be a great opportunity to introduce homeschooling to them also.

I would love to sit and browse all the books in the bookfinder…but we have dial up and it is very slow and painstaking to look through without having any idea of titles to look for. I knew you guys seems to always have great resources and ideas for all types of studies so I am hoping you guys can help steer me in the right direction.

Thank you and may the Lord bless each of you,

    Shelly

    Shelly,

We’re going to the Destin area in about three weeks. I wish we were going to be there at the same time. I’d love to meet you. As far as the study goes, I’m looking into that myself and I’ll let you know what I find.

Also, I checked out the trip journal on the SCM homepage and plan to have my kiddos use that.

Oh, do I have a book for you. 🙂 I’m mired here in the Midwest with no prospect of ever seeing a seashore, but The Burgess Seashore Book for Children is certainly a must with your young ages of children! By Thornton Burgess.

I don’t have this one myself, but we love Jim Arnosky books, and he has one out called Beachcombing, Exploring the Seashore.

I’m surely not a seashore expert–have never even seen one! but these ought to get you started and hopefully you’ll hear from lots more folks who’ve actually managed to SEE a seashore. 🙂

I’m not sure if you are looking for certain CM books, but these are ones we have used in the past, mostly with Five in a Row or other literature based unit studies.

    Gramma’s Walk

    Night of the Moonjellies

    A House for Hermit Crab

Crinkleroot’s 25 Fish Every Child Should Know

    Other ideas:

*do math with seashells! (sorting, adding/subtracting, counting, size order, etc.)

*get a book that shows the names of different types of shells and learn the names

*draw seashells in your nature journal

*memorize Psalm 8, use part of it as copywork

*here is a fabulous resource for you:

There are lots of units based on beach-themed books, a library list (scroll down) and some free lapbooks on ocean animals! I hope something here will help you! 🙂

Thanks everyone for the info. I will look into all the resources. Jen if you are going to be down in Destin..you may be interested in the Dinosaur AdventureLand in Pensacola. It is a creation museum that has lots of activities that use science, and adventure to point to God’s creation. We went there last year while visiting Destin. They were underconstruction at the time but there were lots of outdoor activities. Here is the website http://www.dinosauradventureland.com The adventureland is better then what is shown on the website.

If anyone else has other ideas…I would love to hear them.

    Thanks,

    Shelly

    Hello,

We had the great pleasure of living on the beach in Pensacola for a year with the military. When we lived on the beach we really enjoyed reading Pagoo by Holling C Holling. There were tons–ok a lot, of “pagoos” all over the place and the kids had a ball keeping them for a day or two and then letting them go. They need to have access to sea water or they die (just so you know in advance). I had eight or so in a tub and had to read up fast on how to care for them.

You might want to research beaches too. Johnson Beach is where we went when we wanted to really hang out on the beach. Our condo had a smallish beach. Pensacola Beach can get VERY crowded.

Oh, and if you want cheap food try to eat away from beach. We were shocked at how much more the restaurants are near the big beaches.

Have a great time. I miss living there!

I love Suzanne Tate’s Nature Series. Check out http://www.suzannetate.com/.

The pictures are lovely and gently tell a story about a sea creatures and the children learn about the animals habitat and habits. I try to get a few books each year.
