Kayla, that’s a cute story! My daughter wears a modest neckline one piece, with a knee length swim skirt over it that I made. This last year she had her first swim lessons, and I had a moment before they started, of wondering if any of the kids might make her feel uncomfortable about her swim skirt, but after a few lessons, the other girl in her lessons showed up wearing her own pink swim skirt, because she wanted to match Lottey! I thought that was so great!
Karen, I can’t go without support, so I actually find a bikini top that fits and wear that under my swim shirt. To get one that adequately covers, I get a plus size one that ties at the back and top, so that it can be tightened. I do find this frustrating though, because it again adds to the cost.
I have been ordering from Coolibar lately. I love their long sleeved SPF 50 shirts to wear biking or swimming! You can buy swim capris to wear under skirts. Cute stuff for kids long or short sleeved and modest!
OKay. I wasn’t sure how a regular bra would hold up. *L* I didn’t mean that pun! *L* I liked the “swim-dresses” I saw at the meant to be modest site. I’m a little concerned about how tight they would be at the bust and how awful I’d look! Without getting too personal, is there anyone who’s “well-endowed” who wears those “swim-dresses”?
I typically wear a swim shirt with bikini top under and then mens trunks or swim skirt. I usally wait until the swim clearance at local stores or Lands End and I have found cute things to put together. 🙂 I also do this for my girls. Lands End will have great sales and I get my girls a lot of swim wear through them. I have also found some cute swim shorts/shirts for girls at Kohl’s.
Karen, I understand your struggles! Unfortunately, I don’t have much advice. I’m always struggling, because something either looks immodest on me, because it’s too tight, or I look like I’m wearing a giant bag, because I have to go so many sizes up so it fits in the bust. Eagerly waiting if anyone else has good advice!
I agree with seekingHISheart, I wear men’s swim trunks (there are tons of cute girly ones actually:) and a short sleeved swim shirt that has the same colors in it, or just black. I wear a sports bra under the swim shirt. It’s very comfortable and I’m pretty well covered, and I don’t feel frumpy. Thrift stores have tons of men’s swim trunks, and Walmart has cute swim tops for 10.00.
Neat thread. I am going to check out all the links for sure. I found a suit at Academy and I sewed an old bra into it. I feel so much more secure and comfortable wearing it. I have had it for 2 years though and this will be its last season. So I will save these links for next summer. May get better prices in I order in winter. LOL
Well, I think sometime when I’m shopping without children (! next year???!!) I’ll hit the racks of Walmart and Target and see what I can find as far as a tanktop and shorts kind of thing.
I did order a suit from Lands End, I’m not looking forward to trying it on!! *L*
My big objection to the Coolibar and the Lime Ricki is the price. (Of course, my Lands End suit will end up costing not that much less, even though it was on sale!). And my objection to the Meant to Be Modest swim dresses are how I’ll look. There is such a thing as too much fabric on top, you know? A little bit bigger v-neck on those dresses would help a well-endowed woman’s top to look not so big. I’m not saying to be immodest. Anyway. You probably know what I mean.
Karen, I know the price of Lime Ricki’s suits seems high, but they are worth it because you’re getting quality. I have bought Target and Walmart swim wear in the past, and they barely make it to the end of one swim season. Actually, the last Walmart suit I had started getting threadbare in the rear end after just three months of wear! Luckily, it was a swim skirt and the threadbare part was covered by the skirt, but still… Not lasting quality. The suit I purchased from Lime Ricki in 2010 still looks brand new. I wore it to the pool last week! I don’t remember exactly what I paid for it, but it was in the range of $60-$70. If I have to buy a new $30 Target suit every year, then I end up spending $90 for the same three years. So u really save money by investing in quality from the beginning. My Lime Ricki suits will probably last me another 3-4 years, assuming I don’t get bored with them and replace them just because I want a change (which is likely because that’s just me). Just thought it might help to see the perspective of spending a little more and how it can save money in the long run.
erin.kate, glad to see another Lime Ricki fan! I was beginning to think I was crazy for being the only one!
And I bought the black swim skirt to go with it. What I love about the skirt is that it has adjustable rouching (sp?) and drawstrings to make it longer or shorter. I don’t think they make this style anymore, but I’m glad I have it. My other Lime Ricki top has black in it, so I can mix and match.
