For those who use or have used Susan Barton’s reading system, how many times a week and for how long do you work on it?

There is a lady who comes to our town 1x/week and will do dyslexia tutoring using the Barton system.  She works with the student for 1 hour.  I wasn’t sure if 1x/week (1 hour) a week as enough.

    Thanks

It is designed to be done at the minimum…twice a week for an hour each time.  We used to try to work on it every school day.  Now my daughter goes to a private Wilson (OG) tutor…1 hour twice a week with homework on the off days.  I would see if there was some way you could work it out for twice a week.

We are currently using the Barton System. My educational consultant, who is also a tutor, told me the same as the PP…. 2 hours a week. I’m not sure if every child who goes to a tutor is going that often. That is definitely for the parents who are purchasing the program and using it at home. Actually, those two hours are for the summer. Because of the level of difficulty with my daughter, during the school year I need to do more. She recommended 45 min. to an hour daily when possible. If your child is mild, maybe tutoring once a week would be sufficient. If your child is homeschooled, you have an advantage. You can adapt the reading to the Barton System. My consultant said that the kids she tutors who go to school are forced to read, so when they go to be tutored, they actually need to be retrained. So, mixing other reading while doing this system is not beneficial. The reading needs to be controlled. My whole language program for this next school year is going to be Barton. I will not use any other English, spelling, or writing program. It’s costly, but sells again for a good price. I felt I didn’t have any alternative because my daughter was just not progressing in her reading and her spelling is not good. (Barton is praised for making good spellers) We started at the bottom and are working up. So, far, she is doing well:)

I was looking at the lady’s schedule again who tutors.  She states that Mondays she is in my town, Tuesdays in a town an hour away.  Wed-Fri she has time slots available but doesn’t specify the town she is in.  It is probably the town an hour away ’cause our town is quite small.  I am going to email her and clarify that, though.  Also, she charges $18 per lesson (so, per hour).  Is that a fairly normal price?  I have no idea what to even compare it to.  That would come up to about $160/month.

I am paying $25/hour, so $18 seems fair.

Wow – dyslexia tutoring here (using Barton) is $60 for a 55 minute hour!

I definitely feel better about the price now.  suzukimom – that is crazy to charge $60/hr.  I don’t know how anyone can afford it!!  I’m not sure if I can come up with the money, but will keep it as one of our options as we try and figure next school year out.

Well we sure can’t afford it, which is why we are living without any tutoring!
