My bunch headed out for a Cinderella ballet today and now that I’m home, I’ve decided next time we’ll save the $50 and just watch the cartoon movie instead. Ds 6 really didn’t enjoy (typical and was expected), he instead kept telling me his tooth was ready to be pulled. Have you had any field trips that didn’t go as expected? At least we have had the experience to see it and know that plays are more our thing. I do think it would be fun to act it out, but sadly I have only 3 kiddos.Paula
My kids are pretty good about sitting through things but they don’t enjoy everything. I think it is good to stretch their tastes but not too much at a time. Maybe try easier things to start? Concerts made for kids or puppet shows.
While ballet may not be your favorite, don’t give up on such things too easily. Sometimes things are an acquired taste and sometimes it’s part of spreading the feast and letting them take what they’re ready for. My ds9 is as all boy as they come – dirt, monster trucks, sports, shooting, etc, but he also enjoys the symphony, musicals and even enjoyed the Nutcracker and Radio City music Hall Christmas Spectacular a couple of years ago. Would he have chosen the ballet or RCMH, no, but he did appreciate them. He does enjoy the symphony and musicals quite a lot. We’ve seen A Christmas Carol and Mary Poppins this year which were both terrific.
I guess what I’m encouraging you to do is to not give up on something like ballet after one exposure. It may never be a favorite, but you can develop an appreciation. Keep spreading the feast!

PS – prior to homeschooling, I detested poetry. While it isn’t my favorite subject still, I have a great appreciation for it and greatly enjoy many poets (R.L. Stevenson, Maya Angelou are two of my favorites). If I had not persevered in the beginning, I would not have discovered my affinity for certain poets.
