Okay, I know that this may be a silly question but here it goes…

My baby is only going to be one year in a few weeks and I am already anxiously wanted to give him the best books. He loves to look at books and be read to. What do you suggest at this age? Do you think I have to be concerned with what I read to him. I don’t like so many of the cartoon character and disney baby books out there, etc. Is there such a thing as “baby twaddle” 🙂

    I know silly question..forgive me

YES THERE IS BABY TWADDLE! LOL I agree, skip the Disney and cartoon character garbage. For some ideas to check with in your library, look at the Before Five in a Row or Five in a Row books. You don’t have to use the curriculum, but you can enjoy the lovely books. Very young children love colorful pages, and repetitive language. Once you read a few that are like FIAR titles, you’ll know the good ones as soon as you see them. I’ll try to post some of our favorties later in the day.

I, however, also found something interesting out. I was kind of an odd mom, I was older, had been in graduate school, and suddenly found myself home with a baby and no idea what to do with him. You are going to laugh. LOL But he seemed to like the sound of my voice, and I was so used to reading certain things–I just read to him what I wanted to read. So I read to him the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, political science quarterlies, and whatever books I wanted to read. I never really stopped. I read to all my babies from birth. Sometimes I’d go to the library and get them pretty picture books, and sometimes I would just read what I had. I read novels to them, I read Beatrice Potter to them (the REAL THING, not the stupid dumbed down versions) I read poetry to them. They seemed to eat it up. 🙂 Perhaps that’s why we’re all a bit odd. 🙂 But I really believe that babies just love the cuddles and the sound of mama’s voice.

I love Sandra Boynton books, that said, though. I love the silly animals and we have about five of them permanently engraved on our memories from reading so often. You should ask my husband sometime to do the “Barnyard Dance” for the sake of other poor children who’ve never seen it done. 🙂 I’ll probably recite “Moo, Baa, La-la-la” on my deathbed (that, and maybe Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, lol)

I’ll try to get our old favorite picture books out later. 🙂

And don’t forget Sandra Boynton’s But Not the Hippopotamus. 🙂 We still quote that book even though my kids are teenagers.

When my kids were little we didn’t have much for the board books that are sold for very young children. We just jumped right in with picture books. Some of our favorite picture book authors include Don Freeman, Eric Carle, Robert McCloskey, and Bernard Waber.

My kids still love picture books. In fact, the last used book sale we went to had many of Don Freeman’s books. My kids grabbed them all and insisted we get them to add to our home library. 🙂

If you can look at the book list for Before Five in a Row, those are excellent! 🙂 A few might be too long, but so many of them are favorites in our home!

    Goodnight Moon

    Runaway Bunny

    ABC Bunny

    The Little Bunny

    Going on a Bear Hunt

    Jesse Bear books

    My Blue Boat

    Yellow Ball

    Corduroy

Those are some of our favorites from B4FIAR.
