We’ve been using AVKO for 4 weeks now, at the suggestions of some here. We also do dictation. My son is in tears almost every day with AVKO. Am I missing something? It seems to me that because the rules are not explained, he continues to get most of the words wrong. He is so discouraged and feeling like a stupid little boy (he’s almost 9 with vision perception issues). It’s breaking me heart. His spelling is so bad he couldn’t possibly write even one coherent paragraph. Help!
The AVKO motto is : Mistakes are Oppurtunities to Learn They tell you to tell your child this and have them write it in their notebook. I told mine in the beginning, you do not know all these words and you will get some wrong.
The way we use it is: say the word, he spells it, then I write it out on a mini dry erase board, he corrects his answer, move on to next word.
When I write out the correct spelling I use 2 different colors of marker. I put the family word in green and the other parts of the word in black or blue. For example, the word in first, so write it in green. The next word pin, write -in in green and the p in black. I told my son see how the words sound alike and they are spelled alike.
Instead of telling the kids the rules, they are supposed to pick up on the fact that all the words are spelled similarily.
While I’ve not used AVKO, I did review it in depth about a year ago. It was not for us, we’re a rules family! At this point, dd9 is doing Spelling Wisdom prepared dictation with unknown words analyzed the way we’ve learned to do it through SWR and AAS. DS6 is using AAS by itself.
I often recommend O-G methods along the lines of WRR, SWR, Phonics Road, etc, but the best I’ve found is All About Spelling. It is very incremental, clearly explains the rules and is very hands on with color tiles to manipulate. It is reasonably priced and the author, Marie, is very accessible. You can see samples online. It might be worth a shot. I feel certain you will find success with it.
