I was wondering if there are other Australians out there using SCM and what do you use for Australian History?
We have 2 kids (ds 9 and dd 7). We currently live/work in Israel but I want the children to have some Australian History and Geography etc so they can relate our family when we go “home” on furlough.
I was thinking of just reading about Australian Explorers then mapping their journeys. Would this be enough? Can anyone recommend some living books about the explorers?
It’s so nice to meet another Aussie on this forum. We have ds8 and dd2
With our ds8 we have done Australian Hist/Geo or HSIE in Term1. We used The Australian Book Traveller from http://www.downunderlit.com It uses living books to travel the country. There are 10 core books so we did one per week. We really liked doing this and kept it quite simple. it is written in the Five In A Row Style and have alot of activities to offer but we just did what we wanted to and left the rest thinking that down the track we’ll go back and do it a little more in depth. At this stage we treated it more like an overview of Australia.
If you were interested they sell a great map on it’s own.
A couple of books that might be helpful also would be The Australia Book by Eve Pownell and Our Sunburnt Country by Arthur Bailey.
I think your idea of reading about the Aust. Explorers and mapping there journeys is a fantastic idea. I guess the hardest thing would be finding a good living book/s. I guess the hardest thing would be access to the books?
At our registration interview the BOS (Board Of Studies) delegate talked about Australia as often being left out of homeschool curriculum so he was really happy with what we were going to do and said it was more than enough. I think that your idea would be more than enough too.
I’ve heard that Jackie French has some great aussie historical biographies/living books. I will do some asking around and let you know if/what I find.
Thats right Michelle, Jeanne at a Peaceful Day has alot of great literature ideas. It’s definitely worth to take the time to browse there. Have a great day.
Hi Renelle, Great to meet another Aussie here. Thanks for the suggestions. I spent quite alot of time looking at the DownunderLit site and found lots of great stuff. I’m not sure about using their History but I did find some great Copy Work books which use Australian literature. It will be a nice introduction to some pieces of poetry and other stories.
Thanks suzukimom for the link to the Oh Peaceful Day blog. I found some very helpful information there. Her blog is amazing.
I know this is an older post, but while doing a google search for something else I stumbled upon this list of Aussie living books. 🙂 I love the fact that they are all so full of historical title!
