What audio books do you like for your preschooler? My dd is 4 1/2 and she thinks she is as big as her 9 year old sister. She wants to “listen” to books as well. However, some of the audios I have tried just don’t have her attention and she says she doesn’t like them. Do any of you use audios with your preschoolers? If so what do they like? What did you try first? We have been checking out audio from our library for quiet some time now, however their selection is limited.
We have others that he will listen to if my 6yo picks them out, but these are the ones that he chooses out for himself when given the chance to choose. We love audio books for rest time too. =) I alternate these with classical music and hymns for children (the ones we really like are part of the Bible Study Fellowship children’s program.)
We have Frog & Toad, Winnie the Pooh, The Cat in the Hat, and Green Eggs and Ham, and a Little Golden Treasury with The Pokey Little Puppy and a few others on them.
For Christmas, we’re getting them James Herriot’s Treasury for Children, The Giving Tree, and Miss Rumphius.
(everyone loves these, but the 2, 3, and 4 year olds love them the most)
Those are all great suggestions. Also, Little House on the Prairie series. We check them out from the library. Be careful which Winnie the Pooh audio you get. The first one I got from the library was a dull monotone male voice. Then I saw a different one at another library and the voices were very engaging on it.
My mother-in-law recorded several favorite picture books for my kids for gifts – Stellaluna, The Little Engine that Could, Ferdinand and more. They are favorites. Last year, dear friends of ours with 4 boys recorded several for our kids – Angus and the Ducks, Snowmen at Night, The Diggingest Dog and more. These are are faves, too!
what a great idea! i’ve thought about having DH do that with Proverbs/Psalms to have *if* he ever deploys again, so the kids can still listen to him read from the Bible.
Kathi, that’s a great idea and a wonderful way for him to be involved from afar! I did it myself this summer when I took a trip without the kids. Mine were simple and I said, “ding” to turn the page, but I emailed one per day and they had mommy reading. They loved it.
Having Grandmommy and our dearest friends read to the kids and record themselves has been a real blessing. She does hers complete with background music and something unique to turn the pages. She is so good, she could make a career out of it! She’s recorded a dozen perhaps over the years. Our friends had all 4 boys – 13, 12, 7 and 5 at the time, help and ring a bell to turn the pages. I simply gave them some favorite books and they chose the ones they wanted to do. I think they did 6 different ones. The glued a cd envelope in the front of the book and put the labeled cd there.
I know the OP was looking for already recorded books and there are good suggestions for those. Don’t forget librivox, too. Just wanted to offer a unique gift idea in this vein.
Wow that’s great we loved that book. Also great idea’s I’m hoping to get my daughter to start listening to more books on tape while brothers are doing school.
I have a 4 1/2 year old son who loves Jim Weiss Giant tales. We also have Hide Em in your heart audio cd by Steve Green. Both of these are his favorites. The Hide Em in Your heart is a music cd with Scripture songs. I am considering getting him the Bear one by Steve Green.
