I need some suggestions for an audio book from Audible! We are heading to my Brother in Law’s funeral tomorrow and have a 6 hour drive round trip. Last weekend we made a similar hour drive and finished up listening to These Happy Golden Years, it was a huge help to have with eight children in the van.
So what are some books that would appeal to a 1-13 year old crowd for the drive? (A few not to put on the list because we’ve listened to them a lot: The Chronicles of Narnia, Little House on the Prairie series, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson).
First, my condolences on the loss of your brother-in-law.
I don’t know about what’s on Audible! but when we drove the 25 hours from Ontario, Canada to Florida this past Spring we listened to My Father’s Dragon…it was a hit (my kids ages 4 through almost-11). Not sure if you have this on-hand but I also brought along my CDs from the Vox series (Composer Study) that we’d already studied…so we essentially “reviewed” Bach, Beethovan, Mozart, Handel. The kids loved this – said it felt like they were visiting old friends!
Hope you get some other good ideas, and praying that the drive is safe and pleasant.
For summertime, I am thinking Gone Away Lake (and the sequel Return to Gone Away Lake) or The Penderwicks, which is on our to do list. Your Story Hour Great Stories are good for shorter dramatizations. We also enjoyed A Cricket in Time Square with violins in the audio book.
Tristan, I’m sorry for your loss! Here are our all time fave audiobooks and series – The Sugar Creek Gang (we own all of them and they are fantabulous!), The Saturdays series, Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat (series but we’ve only listened to the first one), and my personal favorite is Trumpet of the Swan read by the author, E.B. White.
The Lamplighters dramas are fantastic, too. I doubt they are on audible, but available from publisher.
Tristan, I too am so sorry for your family’s loss. We’ll be praying for you.
I’m going out on a limb with my Audible suggestion because it might be classified as twaddle. :0). It’s Hank the Cowdog series. Everyone in our family from ages 3-41 loves them. If I had to pick just one it would be The Case of Prowling Bear…I think.
