DS is in 1st grade, but a voracious reader. He’s been known to read a chapter book in 30 minutes given the opportunity. His favorite subject is history. For history this year I wanted to keep things pretty easy for me, so we are reading through some Landmark american history books and narrating, then adding them to our BOC. Easy. However, I didn’t account for the fact that he would want to read a bunch of books on his own about the same topic. For example, we finished the Landmark book The Vikings by Elizabeth Janeway. Then I spent probably an hour with the library webpage open in one window and amazon in the other window trying to pick out other books about vikings that I could request from the library for him to read on his own for free reading. I have come to the realization that it would be really helpful to have a good booklist book to use for reference on what books I can request to supplement him. I have heard good things about All Through the Ages. I have also heard good things about TruthQuest, though I don’t think I’ve found much about using the “Younger Students” levels of TQ. Can someone give me thoughts on whether either (or both?) of these would be useful in pulling books from for our study of american history this year? Thanks!
