I’m feeling so alone recently, as I mentioned in another post, the ‘oddball’ among homeschoolers 🙂 I have a 4.5 year old DD, and so I’ve been looking around, trying out different groups with which we might socialize with in the years to come. Don’t get me wrong, I have multiple options of co-ops and groups. But they all seem to involve lots of co-op time, classes, homework, etc. The Classical Conversations deal is big around here (it’s where all the cool kids go), and I’ve lost count of how many times I get asked “why don’t you want to do that?”. And so many people sit their 4 year olds down for ‘lessons’ and ‘school’. When everyone starts talking about their ‘curriculum’ for ‘Kindergarten’, I don’t have any – and I don’t plan to! My girl and I are loving life, living life, learning from it, she’s totally engaged, I don’t question that. But it all makes me feel sort of….alone.
Besides the co-ops and groups, there are a couple nearby CM-hybrid schools, but I”m not interested in those either. I just want to do simple CM homeschool with my sweet girl – at. Home.
I’ve done some web searches and cannot find any area CM groups. I”m hoping that maybe someone on here is near the Atlanta area, and/or might know of some local CM-ers…..anyone? Bueller?
Hello, I don’t live near Atl but live in Middle Ga! We come up that way quite a bit due to family still living in that area! I would love to meet you sometime! We are planning some trips over the summmer up to Stn Mtn, Kennesaw Mtn, and Big Shanty..Kennesaw is where I am from! PM me if you would like!
We are in Dallas, GA which is not far from Kennesaw. We don’t do co-op classes because they stress me out. We are in a group that does field trips, park days, science fairs and art shows and we love it! Let me know if you’re nearby!
I can’t believe I let a month go by without responding to this thread! Well, yes I can believe it….I forgot to check ‘notify me of posts via email’ 🙂 That’s the only way I remember to check back on things.
Anyway, I”m so glad to know there are several of you around! I’m going to try and PM people.
Heather, you said it perfectly – co-ops stress me out!! I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one. They’re not what we need, but I felt pressured to do them to have her ‘learn’ something or ‘make friends’. Ughhh….
We have some family friends that attend Perimeter School. It is a CM based private school from Perimeter Pres in north Atlanta. Not sure where you are but this might be a resource for like minded families. I know you aren’t interested in putting her in school but these are families that are like minded. Hope that is helpful.
So, I wrote a similar post to this first one in the thread, a week or so ago! Did anyone end up coordinating an Atlanta CM-er meet? We would be totally interested, if so. I have three kiddos – 6, 4.5 and 13 months. We’re inside the perimeter. We are members of a co-op this past semester that I haven’t been thrilled with and looking for something else for the second half of the year and going forward! Would love to meet some like-minded families to chat and enjoy occasional learning opportunities, etc. We also love to hike and we frequent North GA so any other families loving that we’d enjoy some company!
I know there are several families in my area that do CM. I haven’t managed to actually talk to & get together with any 🙁 We are in a homeschool group that does class days a couple times per month, & it’s pretty low-key but haven’t managed to make any “friends” to get together with CM-wise. I’m in Hiram & would love to be able to get together with others doing CM because I’d like to learn more & see it in practice while having some interaction with other adults (& children for my girls). My girls are 8 & 5 plus I have two step-daughters (almost 10 & 8) that are in public school but might occasionally be involved…maybe homeschooled eventually if we wind up with custody.
Hi I actually just posted a similar response to CMilam then I saw this one too! I know of a coop that doesn’t officially let you start until your dd is 6. But they arrange for those younger than that to meet at the park on Fridays and play together. Then you can join with the larger group for stories and lunch and more playing. They meet in Tucker at a park. Of course they just ended for the year with a field day, but I thought I’d share anyway.
My kiddos and I would love to get together with some new friends. We are officially starting lessons this summer and need some more homeschool friends!
I live in Intown Atlanta. I have been homeschooling for 3 yrs (officially), but my 9 year old has never been in school. I have 4 kids ages 9, 6, 3, and 1. I have tried different homeschooling methods/philosophies, and I am feeling very drawn to CM. I would LOVE to meet with a CM study/prayer group and learn more together and support each other.
It would be great to meet with some other homeschool families or moms. Right now we are in a secular homeschool co-op, and we need more. I would love to talk about what might work for Intown families.
Found this post looking for other Atlanta-area CMers. If you’re still interested in finding other moms, please contact me. I’m looking to start a group – either support for moms or a nature study. Let me know your ideas & what your needs are. I’m on Instagram @katyheartsthepeach
