I’m curious about what others do for assigned reading once reading has been established in the child’s free time. We go from reading aloud to mama, to assigned reading (historical fiction, fiction, biographies). My daughter, 10, has picked up reading fiction on her own at night. She’s making good choices, so I’m curious what others do for school reading once the child has formed the habit of reading on his/her own. (She’s reading books like the Little House Series, All of a Kind Family, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, we buddy read Holes, Meet Martin Luther King, Jr., Frindle.) BTW- I posted here in years past in frets about this child not being able to read. The other night she started a Magic Treehouse book and finished it in the morning. Time. It was just took time.
my oldest is in 6th grade and she still reads aloud to me daily. She reads a lot for pleasure but still has assigned reading for her to read to me. It is such great practice and keeps her on her toes because when she reaches a hard word she can not skip it like she can when she reads to herself.
I know for me as an adult who spelling has always been hard, me reading out loud to my kids has really helped my spelling. It forces me to slow down and really see the words. Reading out loud I think has really great benefits, not just reading so we plan to keep it up for a long time 🙂
