anyone using/used art/music curriculum they just loved, was easily understood, kids loved it…I have 1st and 3rd graders, love to draw; I have Drawing with Children/Monart but it is not user-friendly, and seems limited in mediums; also looking for overview of Great Artists/Musicians; Thank you!
My kids love the Draw Write Now books. They ususally don’t write, but love the drawing instructions. My two are ages 7 and 9. We also use the SCM curriculum guide to pick out artists and composers to study. Then I get library books and use online resources for that artist or composer.
I have some links on my blog if you would like to look at it.
We’re using “The Wonders of Nature Sketchbook: learn about nature & learn how to draw it!” by Colleen Monroe and illustrated by Michael Glenn Monroe. It is an absolutely beautiful drawing guide with lots of nature & animal facts throughout.
As for music…your local library system should have the Classical Kids series (Mozart, Vivaldi, Handel, etc.). I decided to play them during meals or whatever (my kids are small..4 1/2 & 19 months) but I was SO excited when my 19-month-old started humming a Mozart tune, and one day, my 4yo said, “Mom, I want to hear Mozart!”
Thanks for the info on the nature sketchbook! My daughter loves to draw and we all love nature! Another Christmas present:) I recently found at a yard sale the book “Stories of the Great Composers” it has a CD with it and has short sessions on teh lives and music of the great composers with imaginary stories based on fact. Each lesson also has a work page at the end but I don’t use that yet with my young children. I also found the book “Can You Hear It?” and it has a CD that contains music from composers that goes along with selected paintings and they ask for the children to listen for certain sounds in the music as they look at the painting. I thought it was really neat.
Hope this helps!
