My husband and I have been talking about what we’re going to be doing for our upcoming ‘series’ for family Bible studies and we’ve decided that we’re going to work through Vos’ book chronologically and use art prints for as many of the stories as we can, and each child will get a photo album that they can fill of their prints (we were inspired by some of the recent articles posted for Sunday School). I have a number of pieces that I know I’ll want to use, but wondering if anyone has any favourites that they’d like to suggest?
Rembrandt did a lot of Bible sketches and art pieces that you might look for. We have a couple of books that pair his works with the corresponding Bible passages.
While I love to look at the Bible scenes from the master artists, the one drawback I’ve encountered is that many of them place the Bible characters and events in the artist’s time period. The architecture and clothing styles reflect the artist’s culture more than the ancient Israelite culture. So feel free to appreciate their beauty, but you might want to keep an eye on that aspect and make sure your children don’t get confused.
Thank you, Sonya, for the good advice! I agree, and I also like to do read the story before the picture is shown so that they get their image in their mind first from the Bible, not the picture. We’re just looking for something to enrich our family Bible studies for a season.
Sonya, thank you for that insight as I had not thought of that. I recently got “Rembrant: The Old Testament” published by Nelson and tonight I am going through it and marking the pages that corrasond with our SCM Module for Genesis – Deuteronomy and I am amazed to see that evey week there seems to be a story that we will read that also has artwork done by Rembrant. I am making a note on the pages in my SCM guide to remind me to reference the Rembrant book.
