Before we really had a good idea of how to do an artist study, my daughter was already interested in art and we have checked out lots of books from the library. She would pick an artist, get all the books they had on that artist and look at them that week while I worked with her little brother during school time. She would even copy some of their paintings using colored pencils. Now I am not sure what to do since we have had these artists in her “book basket” already this year:

    Mary Cassatt

    Monet

    Van Gough

    Rembrant

    Degas

    O’Keeffe

My question is where do I go from here? Should we go back and study these in more detail? And what do I do if I can’t find books about the artists in the modules at my library?

Thanks again for all the wonderful help you all have been 😉

Amanda, the artist lists are only suggestions in case you need them. Please feel free to study any artist that you like at any time.

Since your daughter has already formed a relation with those six artists, you might want to do some others for a while, then come back and re-visit those old friends at a later date.

When you say that you can’t find books about the artists, are you referring to books with their works in them or do you mean biographies about them?

    Sonya,

I was referring to books with their works in them. I could only find books for Monet and Cassatt for module one. I skipped down to module 6 since we are doing Module 5 for history. I found more things at our library for these artists, but not all of them. I figured since we have studied a lot of Impressionists that we could study Grandma Moses next and study more of O’Keeffe’s works too. Our library has some Norman Rockwell picture books, but these three are the only artists available from Module 6.

Those postcards that you mentioned on the seminar DVD….where do I get them and are they available for a lot of different artists?

I think Dover has about 8 or 10 different artists on the postcards, maybe a few more but not all artists that I like. Be sure to check bookstores’ bargain sections. I’ve found many large art books there. You can also look for calendars with large pictures, or even find an artist’s works on a Web site and study the picture on screen. And don’t overlook used books online. Those are often quite a bargain.

Thanks Sonya 😉  I think I need to look on some used book sites for sure 😉 My children are both using watercolor pencils right now trying to copy a Mary Cassatt painting on poster board 🙂 hahaha  I printed one of her pictures from a website for them to use. The clarity of the picture is not great, but they don’t seem to mind. 😉

I picked up a couple of Grandma Moses and O’Keeffe books from the library this afternoon. My daughter informed me that she did not like O’Keeffe’s paintings that they were too weird. She wanted to study painters like Degas and Cassatt…..:)  So, I may just continue with what we have already dipped into this year. They don’t seem to be tired of the same artists, and I think I moved too quickly through the ones I introduced them to. I assume it is okay to let them have some say in who we study?????

Yes, as long as they don’t get stuck with the same favorites every year and refuse to try a new one. Smile
