I usually choose an artist and then pick out what works I want to view with my children. We have been just putting the current picture as our background for the computer and run a slides how of the works for our screensaver.
I would like to actually have prints made to put in a binder and keep for future reference or display.
Does anyone recommend a nice low cost way to do this? I do like larger prints, at least 8 x 10. I would like them to be of decent quality.
Often you can get prints for less than $1 at stores like Office Depot. Another very good, inexpensive option is previous years calendars. Our co-op will be using some this year and I hope to snag the artists for $5 or less.
I bought 100 calendars for my co-op to use in fine arts. It’s a steal, but I did have trouble getting some of what I wnted in quantities of twenty. 🙂 I was bummed I couldn’t get the Carl Larsson I wanted, but maybe next time.
I found plenty of artists from modern to ancient to choose from. More than we can use in the next five years! I had to hold myself back and remind myself that this sale is yearly!
eawerner, after you get the calendars, then do you just hang it somewhere for the kids to see through the week? Do you keep just a written record of which artist they have studied, or do you rip it out and keep it somewhere for records? Thanks!
amama5, I’m not eawerner, but we make a notebooking sheet for each artist with each picture studied listed. Sometimes, I make small 4×6 copies of the pictures (if they aren’t copyrighted) and my kids have a scrapbook of them. I have a shelf of art prints studied in case we revisit them.
For the notebooking sheet, I do something like this that I make up for each artist. We simply write in the details. When I do the 4×6 copies, I typically print as photos on photo paper either online at Shutterfly or at the local photo lab. My printer can do it, but it eats the ink. This second idea is one from Lindafay at http://www.charlottemasonhelp.com.
Well I just started this, but I cut up my first calendar, found an 11×14 picture frame in the basement, and hung it in our dining room. It actually looks very nice. I’m not sure how I’ll keep the prints after we’re done with them. Probably just find some kind of portfolio or oversized folder to stick them in. I do want to get 4×6 pictures made at a photo kiosk or something so dd can keep an album of all the prints we study. Kind of like this…
I print out a picture, 8×12 size which we display in a frame and then I put it in our Artist Binder, in a page protector. I get the pictures from the Ambleside Online Yahoo group. They have it formatted with the artist’s name and the name of the painting – 6 to 8 prints per artist. I just use my home printer onto photo paper (matte or glossy paper depending on your preference). I look for sales on photo paper and just consider ink a part of my homeschool budget. (I’ll have to look into using Shutterfly or some other photo lab to see if I print more cost effectively.) Probably once a quarter or so I’ll take an hour and print up stuff for 2 or 3 artists and put them in the binder (in page protectors) so that they’re ready to go when I want.
And I’ve also started purchasing the art kits from SCM. LOVE THOSE!!! The cost is probably what I’d pay for paper and ink…or paying a printer, plus you get the bio and teaching tips and such.
I cut the calendar pages out and glued them on card stock. Then hung a wire on the wall next to my daughters bed. We hang the ones we are finished with of the current artist here. My daughter loves to pretend to jump into the paintings as in the “Katie” books. Bhere is a picture of our line.
