What do you use for art history? I have the story of painting, but I’m not very impressed and it’s certainly not from a young earth view.

We just use the Artist Study portfolios from SCM – they provide a little bio and 8 pictures of that artist’s work.  We really like them!

I sometimes borrow books from the library to add to the study – a biography or maybe a book about the technique.  Nothing fancy.

Melanie…what ages or grades will you be teaching?

For younger children, I would use picture study.  However, for a more in depth study, our dd used Short Lessons in Art History last year in 12th grade.  It’s a two book set by Walch Education.  She really enjoyed it.  There are 37 lessons so she covered one per week.  I laid out basic requirements regarding how many writing assignments and art projects to complete per term, but she was free to choose artists and projects that interested her.  Here’s the link with samples….

    Hope that helps,

I have used Art in Story by Marianne Saccardi.  It has lots of activities to pick from, book references, thought provoking ideas, etc.  Covers prehistoric through modern times with a couple artists from each time period.

@Melissa, Thanks for sharing your suggestions.  I’m saving these ideas for our youngest daughter.  She’s all things fine arts and this will be so helpful later down the road.Smile

We’ve liked Adventures in Art from Cornerstone Curriculum. It had CM style instructions and a Christian approach. It relies heavily on Francis Schaeffer’s book which I also recommend (for adults or high school age) — I never get the title of it right; it’s his famous one on western culture.
