Can anyone recommend a good art DVD or book that teaches children to draw, sketch or paint. I mean really teach them. I looked at the art DVD on this website but does each DVD only teach one thing. For instance the level one drawing, does it only teach you to draw a sunflower for $35.00? Or does it teach other drawing concepts. I can’t make that description of it out. This is the ” Creating a Masterpiece” DVD.

Thank you Rebeka. I read the reviews, it all sounds great. Just to clarify, the way they learn to draw the sunflower, they will be able to use those techniques to draw other things on their own?

I can answer that – yes! We started with the sunflower last month. I have a 9 year old and 15 year old doing these lessons. The have also worked on the pastel chicken (level 2?). Then for fun, they went back to the sunflower and did it in pastels using the techniques taught in the video this week. I am sure they could and probably will do other cross-overs (a chicken in pencil) as well as applying what they learned to subjects of their choice. HTH!

I haven’t tried them myself, I have the book but my friend really likes Barry Stebbing’s DVD. There are a few different ones.

I reccomend a book by a friend of mine called Ms Woods Wild Art Adventures. Here is her website: http://www.janwoodharrisart.com/Illustrations.html
I took lessons from her for about 6 years with my older kids, and I can tell you she teaches the techniques that your kids will be able to apply anywhere in any art that they create, nature journals, etc. My younger kids are still a bit young for this but I am so excited to get going with this in a year or two with them.

With all of the CAM dvds you’re learning to use a specific type of art media – so pencil drawing, pastels, etc… But while you’re learning to create a specific project – the sunflower, you’re also learning the broader concepts and techniques you need to then take your skills and work on whatever projects interest you. I love that Kristina is completing the same projects using different media (Send pictures of those to Sharon – she’d LOVE to put them on her website and facebook page!!!), but you don’t have to be limited by the particular subjects of the DVDs. Also on the Sunflower DVD in particular first you learn how to sketch a shell and then a tea pot and then you spend the remaining lessongs working on the Sunflower. All the while you’re learning how to see things in a different perspective so that you sketch them in a life=life manner as opposed to a childlike manner with lots of straight lines and obvious shapes.
