I was thinking of reading this book aloud to my children ages 9 to 16. I have not read the book myself.
I did glance through the first few chapters and noticed more than a few unfamiliar words. Should I keep track of them and have the children look them up?
Can I use it as a geography read aloud?
Any other thoughts or suggestions on the reading of it?
We love this book! We had a wonderful time with it and all 3 boys have read it on their own more than once.
You can either look up a few words before reading a section or you can make a note of some as you go; don’t do TOO many though, and try not to break up the flow of reading too much. If you want to do, say, 20 words a day you might want to try to figure out a few from context and only look up the ones you have no idea about.
It’s a little fanciful for serious geography study, but we did keep a map one time when we read it and drew the “journey” on it.
OH, one other thing. If you should chance to look for a movie, the relatively recent one starring Jackie Chan (!!!) bears little resemblance to the book–there were times it seemed only tangentially related, and it involved among other things a really scary scantily dressed Asian lady with very terrifying fingernails. Sigh. WHAT IS WRONG WITH BOOKS that have sold millions of copies–why does Hollywood have to mess with the stories until they are almost unrecognizable?????
