I just wanted to say that this book turned out to be a huge favorite! I got it on inter library loan so we dedicated 4 weeks to it instead of reading it throughout the year. At first I thought it looked too difficult and technical for my 8, 6, and tagalong 4yo. I went ahead and tried it out and today was our final day and my 4yo was upset and doesn’t want to return it to the library 🙂
This book is so colorful and descriptive that the long chapters held my children captive and prompted very detailed narrations. This last month has a been a flurry of maps and the atlas has been out constantly. Our globe has had a workout too 🙂
This was an excellent living geography study. I just had to mention it and encourage others to fit it in. We were doing Module 4 this year.
It also elicited many instances of the “science of relations” in our home. One really fun example was during the last chapter (that we read today) it mentions James Cook, explorer of Antarctica. My 6yo’s eyes grew huge as she connected it to a book she is reading right now, which happened to be Mr. Poppers Penguins!
It was a thoroughly rich study and we enjoyed it so much. My son now wants to be an explorer, and he hopes there will still unknown lands when he grows up. 🙂 He also wants a world map to hang in his room. My 6yo likes to pray for South American countries now too. Did I mention we liked this book? Lol!
What an encouraging post! I am new to SCM this year, but I am really beginning to notice how so many of the recommendations here are so thoughtfully chosen. It makes me feel so happy to be here. I had a really good feeling this morning about Hymns in Prose. 🙂 I thought, “Wow, this is just brilliant!” 🙂
