I have been considering using SCM’s Middle Ages, Renaissance, Reformation & Epistles guide for history next year, to fold our youngest into our history studies instead of keeping him separated for history. I was curious about one of the necessary resources, Around the World in A Hundred Years, and was surprised to see it got only three stars on Amazon. The reviewers said that the author has a blatently anti-Christian view that she shares freely through the book, and that many parents found it pretty offensive and poor scholarship, to boot.

I’m wondering what folks here might think of this book if they’ve used it, and whether anyone has found an acceptable alternative. I don’t try to shelter my children from other viewpoints and they are well aware that many disagree with the Christian point of view, but as a former journalist, truth without bias is really important to me. I also don’t want to pay for a book that is insulting toward Christians, and am wondering why this particular book was chosen – I know there must be a good reason.

    Thanks for any input,

    Aimee

    Hi, Aimee –

The review posted on that book in our CM Bookfinder gives a few more details and thoughts. When I read it aloud, I used those couple of comments as discussion starting points. I felt that the vast majority of the book was well done and the best I had found on the topic. I hope the review helps with the specifics.
