Went to a public school book giveaway today and found tons of books. I’m not sure if some of them are worth keeping though. Can anyone advise me if these titles/series are worth keeping? The novels I’ve heard of but am not sure about the contents.

    The Catcher in the Rye
The Old Man and the Sea
    The Great Gatsby
    the Hound of the Baskervilles
A Separate Peace by John Knowles

EYEWITNESS history/science book series (sort of like DK books…there are loads of these)
    My America…books
    Dear America…books
    My Name is America…books
picture books by Bill Peet (I suppose they are twaddle but they are really fun…but now I have about 15 of them in hardcover and I’m debating whether they’re worth the space they’ll take up)

I’d keep the first five and Peet’s books.

You should preview Catcher in the Rye before you give it to your kids.  I have to say I was shocked when I read it as an adult.  (And I did not have a sheltered upbringing at all.)  I know it’s a classic but my personal opinion is that it’s not worth keeping.

I had to read The Old Man and the Sea in high school.  It was so. very. boring.  The whole book is about catching a fish.  Maybe it is better for boys?

Eyewitness are great, though there may be some evolution. Bill Peet is good too.  I have been looking for some of them.

I am still not sure on My America….books.  All three of those seem the same to me.  We have a few and my son read some, but I think there are better options in historical fiction.  Some have more mature elements and some romance.  I would not keep too many.  I like Royal Diaries better; they are about real princesses.

I’d toss Catcher in the Rye as far as you can throw it. In fact, maybe “hurl” is a better verb to use.

We enjoy Bill Peet books – to me they’re sort of a more intelligent Dr. Seuss, in terms of the rhyme schemes and stories.

If space is a concern and you don’t want to keep all of them in your house, you will probably be able to find all the others at your library, if it’s a good one. Ours carries tons of the DK Eyewitness books and all of those historical diaries. You could also try selling them on Homeschoolclassified.com.
