I interlibrary loaned “Along Came Galileo,” by Jean Bendick. She also wrote

“Archimedes and the Door of Science.” In looking at the Galileo book, it sure doesn’t impress me as a living book. I don’t see any conversation, and it looks just like one factual statement after another, and the “test” of reading a few pages didn’t draw me in at all. What are other people’s reactions to the Archimedes book?

We read Along Came…and enjoyed it. I’m currently reading Archimedes off and on to myself from my kindle and I like that as well. But, just because I do, doesn’t mean everyone does.

I never read it but my oldest son did (he’s 21 now.)  He really enjoyed it, but as was said, others might not.  He’s a math/science current engineering major anyway so that let’s you know what kind of guy he is.

We recently used Archimedes as a read-aloud for three boys, ages 11-14, and are now reading her book on Galen. We’ve found both to be chock full of information, but still lively and interesting enough to be considered a living book. A good test I’ve found is whether the children can give a narration – things that are too text-booky do not lend themselves. They’ve been able to recount many things from these stories, including lots of interesting tidbits about life in Greece or Rome, as told through the story.

My boys have found each to be fascinating, and I’ve learned a good deal from them as well (and I was an English major and don’t generally love the scientific stuff!).

I like the Galileo book much less than the Archimedes and Galen ones. My favorite of the bunch is the Archimedes one. True, we are science nuts here too but we all liked this one.  Try to look up on Youtube the Mythbusters trying to recreate Archimedes’ supposed invention to light enemy ships on fire with mirrors!  EXCELLENT.
