I am considering using apologia next year but have some questions. – I have conflicting information ( in speaking with other HS moms & what I see on the Internet) in which edition to use 1st. I have read that you could start with the Zoology 1 ( flying creatures) , but I have “heard” that you should start with Astronomy as its the easiest out of all of them. Does it really matter ? Is there a specific order for elementary? – my kids will be in 4th & 2nd next school year. Could I get them both the junior notebook ? I browsed through the samples on Apologia’s website. The regular notebook just seemed to have more writing in it?? – are the experiment kits worth the $$ ? I know they would really love doing the experiments, and I love the idea of everything already gathered for me when I need it. Just wondering before I commit and buy the $89 kit!!! I greatly appreciate your tips & insight 🙂 Jamie

I think the astronomy, botany and the 3 zoology books are all about the same level. We started with the zoology because those were the ones my daughter was most interested in and she had no problem with understanding them. She was probably 4rth grade or so when we started using them. I’ve had friends use them with much younger children as well.

We started with Astronomy (the kids were in 2nd and Kinder) and then to Botony, we are doing zoology 2 next year. I was told you can do them in any order, but that anatomy and Chem/Physics are the more difficult.

I would start with which ever interests you and the kids the most. My kids have really enjoyed Apologia science, and I am learning a lot too!

I do get the experiment pack, but there are options. Some have everything (more expensive) and some have more of the hard to find items (less expensive). I do like that I have everything on hand. Yes, I could plan a head and get what I need at the store, but having it on hand at the start of the year makes it one less thing I have to think about.

My daughter has done astronomy in 3rd grade and physics/chemistry in 4th grade through our co-op. She loved astronomy once she was comfortable with reading the text on her own and doing the work mostly independently. Physics and chemistry was much harder to grasp, and I had to do it all with her. She did not enjoy it nearly as much. She did the jr. notebooking journal both years. The 5th/6th graders did the regular notebooking journal. The only think I didn’t like about the jr. journal was that the copywork and fascinating facts pages had really large lines for journaling. She did not write nearly that big, and she would often write half the size to fit more info onto the fascinating facts pages.

We have not done any of the zoology books, but I can say that astronomy was great! You don’t have to go in any particular order either. I would wait for anatomy and physics/chemistry, though, since they are more challenging.
