Hi! I’m kind of at a loss for what to do for science for my seventh grade son. We’ve finished the Jeannie Fulbright books and my plan was to start Apologia’s General Science. My son, however, REALLY wants to do Chemistry, and I’ve looked at CKE Chemistry. I really want him to be strong in the sciences, and feel like Apologia will provide that, but I don’t want to squelch his interests by not doing chemistry. Advice? Thoughts? Suggestions? I’ve thought about going ahead with Apologia and just checking some books on chemistry out at the library and letting him read those and do experiments on his own just for fun?
Did you know about Fulbright’s latest book in the elementary Apologia series, Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics? It just came out recently. We’ve got the book and notebook already, and plan to use it with my son next year when he’s in 7th grade. He’s already excited about it. 🙂
Christian Kids Explore are good books, but most likely quite a bit below your son’s level. I was hoping to use the Biology one for my three youngest, but I found it to be below the level of my 6th grade son.
Being below his level is what concerned me too-with both CKE and the new Fulbright Chemistry book. He is strong academically and I’m not certain those would be enough of a challenge although I’m sure he would enjoy them. I think maybe I’ll stick with my original plan to start General. Please tell me I’m not the only homeschool mom who has a plan, over thinks and analyzes it and then comes full circle back to the original plan? 😉 Thanks for the input!
Here is a link to The American Chemical Society’s free middle school chemistry curriculum that you can download. I have not used this yet since my daughter is just in 6th grade now but plan to check it out better in the future.
One of my sons did General in 7th grade and did fine with it. You could probably find something in Chemistry for him to do as more of a supplement. We did some of the Ellen McHenry Elements last year and liked it. We did it as a supplement though and our lives got a bit crazy at the same time, so we didn’t finish it, but that’s worth looking into.
This site has free science lesson plans. Her chemistry plan uses Ellen McHenry’s The Elements and Carbon Chemistry books with some other books, biographies, experiments and documentaries.
My son- 13 – is doing General Science for his 7th gr. “school” science and he will read the new Apologia Chemistry/Physics in his free time; which is how he’s read all the other Apologia books, too.
So if your son is personally motivated, he could do both.
