On one of the used book sites, I saw listed “Oxford Children’s History of the World,” by Neil Grant. Has anyone used this? What do you think of it?

Sue, I checked it out on Amazon where you can see a good bit of the first part of the book.  See what you think:

Be sure to read the customer review – that was interesting.  I have to agree that it looks very secular in its presentation of several things – you will have to decide if that bothers you or not.

I think that it is pretty brief and very, very basic: thousands of years old civilizations only get a brief two page spread and those include illustrations.  Off the top of my head, I am thinking the only way I would be able to use this book is in conjunction with All Though the Ages, which lists books for the history through literature.  The Oxford would have to basically be my timeline (spine), but the vast majority of learning and reading would have to be in the books listed in All Through the Ages.  It might work well for you that way – I know that you add things to your spine

However, I haven’t actually used it, so for what my first impressions are worth – there is my $.02.  =)

Yes, that does seem too brief for my tastes. Although, if you didn’t add any additional books, it could be very CM with short lessons….as in, “Let’s finish Ancient Egypt in one week!” (tee-hee-hee)

And I agree that the customer review was interesting. Hmmm….so if you are using Susan Wise Bauer’s Story of the World, perhaps you ought to play “Give Me That Old Time Religion” in the background???

Oh, I’m just having fun with this. Obviously, each of us has to choose history materials that best suit our family’s needs, so we won’t all choose the same materials. In terms of this book, Oxford Children’s History of the World, I think I’ll stick with something like the Burrell book, either Oxford First Ancient History or Oxford Children’s Ancient History. I do agree with the reviewer on one point: I think the name “Oxford” was really what caught my attention!
